Child & Adult ADHD

What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels. Though frequently diagnosed in children, ADHD can persist into adulthood—and many individuals do not realize they have it until later in life.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, approximately five percent of children and two and a half percent of adults have ADHD. Adults with the condition often experience difficulties with time management, task completion, and maintaining focus, which can impact their work, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.

Signs and Symptoms of ADHD in Adults

Adult ADHD may look different from childhood ADHD. Common symptoms include:

  • Inattention: Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, disorganization, and frequent distractions.
  • Hyperactivity: Restlessness, fidgeting, excessive talking, or feeling “on edge.”
  • Impulsivity: Interrupting others, poor decision-making, or acting without thinking.
  • Emotional challenges: Mood swings, low frustration tolerance, and feeling overwhelmed.
  • Executive dysfunction: Struggles with time management, motivation, and completing tasks.

Since symptoms vary from person to person, an accurate diagnosis is key to developing an effective treatment plan.

What Causes ADHD?

The exact cause of ADHD is not fully known, but several factors may increase the likelihood of developing the condition:

  • A family history of ADHD
  • Exposure to tobacco, alcohol, or other harmful substances during pregnancy
  • Early exposure to environmental toxins such as lead
  • Differences in brain function or development

It’s important to remember that ADHD is not a reflection of laziness or lack of intelligence. It is a valid, treatable medical condition.

How We Diagnose ADHD

At Polished Mind Psychiatry, we use evidence-based tools to ensure an accurate and comprehensive ADHD diagnosis. Our diagnostic process includes:

  • ADHD Questionnaire: A structured assessment that gathers detailed information about your symptoms, behaviors, and challenges in daily life.
  • QBCheck: An FDA-cleared, computer-based test that objectively measures attention, impulsivity, and activity levels. It provides valuable data to support a clinical diagnosis and track treatment progress

  • Medication management to help improve focus and reduce impulsivity
  • Behavioral therapy or coaching to build coping strategies and improve daily functioning
