What is Dementia

Dementia is a broad term used to describe a decline in cognitive functioning that goes beyond normal aging. It affects memory, reasoning, language, judgment, and behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type, but other forms include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.

Dementia progresses over time and can significantly impact a person’s ability to live independently. Early intervention and a structured care plan can help slow progression and improve quality of life.

Symptoms of Dementia

Common symptoms may include:

  • Memory loss, especially recent events
  • Difficulty finding words or following conversations
  • Confusion about time or place
  • Poor judgment or decision-making
  • Trouble completing familiar tasks
  • Changes in mood, personality, or behavior
  • Withdrawal from work or social activities
  • Repeating questions or statements

If you or a loved one is experiencing these symptoms, a professional evaluation is an important first step.

How We Diagnose Dementia

Our evaluation process begins with a thorough virtual psychiatric assessment that includes cognitive screening, health history, and a review of medications and daily functioning. When necessary, we may recommend additional testing or collaborate with neurologists or primary care providers for imaging or lab work.

We aim to identify the type and stage of dementia, rule out reversible causes, and tailor a treatment plan that prioritizes comfort, stability, and support.

How We Treat Dementia

Although there is currently no cure for dementia, many treatment options can improve symptoms, manage mood and behavior, and enhance quality of life. Our approach includes:

  • Medication management to address memory loss, agitation, or sleep disturbances
  • Behavioral strategies to manage confusion, aggression, or anxiety
  • Routine and structure to help maintain independence and reduce frustration
  • Caregiver support and guidance to navigate the challenges of dementia care
  • Coordination with primary care and specialists to ensure a well-rounded treatment plan

We offer ongoing monitoring and adjustments to ensure evolving needs are met with dignity and care.

GeneSight Testing for Dementia

In some cases, individuals with dementia may experience depression, anxiety, or behavioral symptoms that require medication. GeneSight testing can guide psychiatric medication choices by analyzing how your genes affect response to certain medications, helping us select the most appropriate and tolerable options.
